Instructions for Watering the Gunite / Shotcrete Swimming Pool Shell
This is a critical portion of the overall pool project that is the responsibility of the homeowner. It is important, because it makes a significant difference in the strength of the finished structure. Please make arrangements to be available to perform this task 3-4 times daily. Typically it is cost prohibitive for the contractor to try and perform this task 3-4 times daily Generally it just takes a small additional effort from the homeowner and the result provides a significant benefit. The overall strength of the shotcrete shell may be compromised if the pool/spa structure is not watered in accordance with the following simple steps:
01
Use a garden hose WITHOUT a spray nozzle attached. Hose attachments can restrict water flow, create too much water splash and don’t effectively soak the shotcrete.
02
Turn the water tap FULL ON.
03
Place you thumb over the end of the hose to simply FLATTEN the spray.
04
Apply directly to the top of the structure (bond beam). Notice that the gunite/ shotcrete surface is very absorbent. Hold the spray in one place until you can will notice that the water is starting to run off the surface, down the walls and then reaching the floor of the structure. Once this starts to occur, move forward along the top of the bond beam approximately one foot. If You should continue around the entire pool until you reach where you started. If there are any areas that are not wet, you can water them now.
05
Once you are a few days into the process you will notice less and less water will be absorbed. The process should take less time to complete. If you notice the water is deeper than 18 inches you can pump out the water or let your Swan representative know. There are several brands of affordable sump pumps available at Home Depot, Lowe’s, and other home improvement stores. Water conscious consumers have used the sump pump with a garden hose attachment to recycle the water that has accumulated in the bottom of the pool during the watering process. The ponding of water is unhealthy at best and may pose a threat to children if allowed to be more that 18” deep.
06
Perform this task two to three (2-3) times daily for the first 14 days after the pool has been gunited/ shotcreted unless guided otherwise by your Swan representative. If insects start to show up in the water, bleach has been known to help with that situation
*NOTE: If you feel uncomfortable moving around the structure, try watering from the inside of the pool first, or please have someone else do this chore. If you do not have anyone at your house to perform this task please advise your coordinator at Swan Pools. We can provide this service, but it can be quite costly.
